Resources for Stage Four

Read the following quote from educator and author, Parker Palmer and consider what some of your “shadowy places” might be.

“There’s a lot of fear connected with  the inner journey because it penetrates our illusions. Taking the inner journey will lead you into some very shadowy places. You’re going to learn things about

yourself that you’ll wish you didn’t know. There are monsters in there—monsters you can’t control—but trying to keep them hidden will only give them greater power.”

– Parker Palmer, Leader to Leader Fall 2001

Read Hebrews 12:5-11. How have you been responding to the discipline of the Lord in your life? What have you learned?

Read Jonah chapter 2 and underline the phrases that speak to you.  Now make them a prayer back to God.

Watch the 1998 movie, The Apostle for a vivid example of a church leader in Brokenness.  Note: this film is rated PG-13 and may not be appropriate for sensitive viewers.

Memorize an important passage for those in Stage Four Brokenness from Hebrews 10:35-39.

 – Find the lyrics for the hymn “Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus” by Louisa M. R. Stead. The author penned these amazing words in one of her darkest hours.  She and her daughter had just witnessed the drowning of her husband as he was attempting to save the life of a boy who also drowned in the ocean.  It was out of her struggle with God during the ensuing days that these meaningful words flowed -“Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus.”
